    What is Residential Battery Energy Storage System?

    Residential Energy Storage Market is projected to grow from USD 719 million in 2022 to USD 1,828 million by 2027, according to the report by SOLARBE GLOBAL.

    So, what is residential BESS and how does it work

    Residential BESS is one of the energy storage system types which stores the power electricity for backup power by batteries. The core components are one or more rechargeable battery modules, usually lithium batteries or lead-acid batteries, onboard sensors, control components, and an inverter. In DC-coupled units, a separate inverter is used. In AC-coupled units, the inverter is integrated into the system. These components make energy storage systems more than mere batteries.

    In a residential battery storage system, the battery packs store the excess power produced by the PV panel, which can be used later. It ensures a stable electric power supply on a cloudy day, sudden power outage, or at night.  

    Pros and Cons of residential BESS

    • Reduce energy costs: Households generate and store electricity independently, which can greatly reduce grid electricity consumption.

    • Avoid peak electricity prices: Energy storage batteries can store electricity during low-peak electricity consumption periods and discharge during peak electricity consumption periods.

    • Realize electricity independence: the family stores solar power during the day and uses it at night, and it can also be used as a backup power supply in case of a sudden power outage.

    • Complicated installation: Some home storage systems require additional inverters and intelligent monitoring equipment.

    Common Types of battery used in BESS

    Early home storage systems generally used lead-acid batteries, which have the advantage of being highly recyclable—99% of lead-acid batteries are recyclable However, the lead and sulfuric acid electrolytes in lead-acid batteries may harmful to the environment.

    Lithium-ion batteries have long service life, but it is difficult to recycle them.

    Highly battery costs: $400-700/KWh per battery
