Kenya has been making significant strides in adopting renewable energy sources. Approximately two-thirds of Kenya’s electricity is generated from clean energy sources, with wind power accounting for 15% (435 MW) and solar contributing just under 2% of the total installed capacity (51 MW). These numbers are expected to continue growing.
The success in wind and solar energy growth has led to excess energy being generated during off-peak hours. To address this, Kenya sees an opportunity to introduce Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The Ministry of Energy (MoE) released the Least Cost Power Development Plan 2021-2030 (LCPDP), which includes plans for BESS to support the integration of variable renewable energy technologies and system stability. The plan includes incorporating 50 MW of BESS into the generation mix by 2022, with the number rising to 250 MW by 2026.
Beyond Kenya, the entire East Africa region is witnessing an increasing uptake of renewable energy technologies. This trend creates additional opportunities for various energy storage solutions, especially batteries. As the market looks toward low emissions and reliable clean energy supply, energy storage will play a vital role in supporting off-grid consumers and enhancing grid stability.
